CHAPTER TWELVE

Cursed

“I’M STRUGGLING TO understand why I am here, and she is not,” Triton paced the ornately decorated room while Dion stood at attention, and Ray sat down picking her fingernails with her dagger.

“The Fate sent word that her wishes were not followed for the nymph to be present at her arrival, so she adjusted her plans. She’ll be at the arena for tonight’s show and she’s invited you to join her as long as you bring the girl,” the messenger said while shifting uncomfortably. I didn’t envy him the job of relaying news that wasn’t ideal. This would be the second time Triton was stood up by the Fates.

Triton pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Someone tell me what happened?”

Ray kept her mouth shut, and merely switched which leg she leaned forward on, then eyed me with a smile. Taunting me about whether I would admit that my ‘joyride’ with Dion was the reason we were late to meeting the Fate at the designated time.

She was a Fate, she would have already known we weren’t going to be there on time.

“Tickets to the Arena are always sold out,” Dion enlightened the group, “if she is there then she already planned on going there instead of joining us for dinner.”

It wasn’t exactly an explanation of why we weren’t there for her arrival, but there was no telling if she was even where she said she’d be having known we weren’t going to be on time.

“There’s always the royal box seat left empty for you,” Ray added.

“I was hoping for different circumstances before going to the Arena,” Triton offered me his hand, a nervousness not accustomed to him giving him an odd glow. Gods apparently really did glisten, even their sweat was gorgeous on them. Ray narrowed her eyes at me, a warning to play my part and not cause any trouble. I took his hand, and smiled at him trying to forget that the only other circumstances I could think of that would have been different would be if I were participating in the Arena for my life. So, it was a bit more difficult for me to sympathize with the king’s awkwardness at having to present me to the Arena as a guest of the royal viewing box instead of clad in armor and fending for the very breath in my lungs.

I gave his hand a bit more of a squeeze than intended.

“The Fate must think she has information worth enough to make up for the inconvenience of chasing her around,” I assured him with a tight grin.

Triton patted my hand kindly, and it was difficult to remember this half naked man was a king who could kill me whenever he chose, instead of the man who recently lost his daughter, and is frustrated by the game he must play with the gods against him. His bright blue eyes were otherworldly, and disarming. I couldn’t help the blush on my cheeks as he held my hand in his, and he looked at me like what I had to say was a comfort to him, and as valuable as the Fate herself.
